Chemical recycling

Already in the 1980s and 90s, researchers worked intensely on chemical recycling processes to re-use polymer waste as a raw material or chemically, respectively. However, technical challenges due to unsuitable feedstock, as well as economic reasons in particular have prohibited industrial applications so far. Growing amounts of plastic waste, increasingly found in oceans and rivers, growing environmental concerns and a need for sustainable solutions have caused a renewed interest in chemical recycling.
